What Is the Sacroiliac Joint?
To start, it will be helpful to briefly review the anatomy of the spine. The spine is composed of a few different segments, which are separated by their structure, location, and function.
- The cervical region is the uppermost portion of the spine and is more commonly simply referred to as “the neck.” This is where all of the nerves of the arms begin before branching off (as well as some nerves that serve various organs).
- The thoracic spine is the next section down from the cervical spine. Specifically, this region makes up the “upper back.” Nerves that branch off from this portion of the spine innervate the muscles and structures located in the trunk such as the abdominals and back muscles. Furthermore, some of these nerves also help with muscles that control breathing and other basic functions.
- Next up is the lumbar region of the spine. This robust portion of the spine is also known as the “low back.” Lumbar nerves connect to the muscles of the legs as well as structures within the pelvis.
- Last, but not least, are two fused segments of the spine known as the sacrum and the coccyx. The coccyx is also more commonly referred to as the “tailbone.”
The sacrum, mentioned in number 4 above, is the main topic of interest in this post. This portion of the spine directly contacts the pelvic bones, providing a connection between the spine, hips, and legs.
One of the bones that fuses to form the pelvis is known as the Ilium. Therefore, the sacro-iliac joint is so named due to the connection between the sacrum and the ilium.
Why Do People Experience Problems with The Sacroiliac Joint?
Sacroiliac joint pain is a very common issue, with roughly 25% of low back pain cases being caused by SIJ. The issue is especially prevalent in highly active individuals and pregnant women.
In general terms, the sacroiliac joint can become “loose” or “stuck” due to excessive stress from activity, different hormonal changes that occur throughout pregnancy, or for some other reason.
Restoring the motion and position of the SI joint is tough to do on your own. Luckily, a chiropractor can help guide the SI joint dysfunction rehabilitation process and get you back in action as soon as possible.
How Does a Chiropractor Help with Sacroiliac Pain?
With a condition such as SI joint dysfunction, chiropractors need to first carefully identify exactly why the issue started in the first place.
Through a detailed examination, your chiropractor will assess your posture, gait, medical history, and any other important factors before moving forward. Once she has gathered this data, your chiropractor can then begin to devise a treatment plan.
Depending on your individual symptoms, goals, and needs, your treatment plan may involve some or all of the following interventions:
- Joint manipulation;
- Gait retraining;
- Exercise;
- Heat/cold;
- Massage;
- TENS;
- Ultrasound.
Beyond the above list, your chiropractor may have other, specific treatments which she feels will benefit you most such as kinesio taping, orthotic prescription, or dietary counseling.
