Wrist pain is an issue that affects nearly every aspect of our lives. For instance, wrist pain can make it hard to cook, eat, drive, type, and do pretty much anything requiring our upper bodies. Truthfully, there are very few ways most of us can avoid using our wrists throughout a typical day.
Luckily, your chiropractor can evaluate the cause of your wrist pain and perform treatments to get you feeling better quickly!
Common Causes of a Painful Wrist
Pain in the wrist can stem from a variety of issues. Let’s take a look at the most common reasons why a person might suffer from this issue.
Wrist Pain Cause #1: Tendonitis in Wrist
The wrist and hand are some of the most intricate instruments we can find in nature. The muscles, tendons, and bones found in the wrist weave past and through each other with incredible precision.
However, when we overuse our wrists or hands, we can often develop tendonitis.
Wrist tendonitis is a general name for a group of conditions that cause inflammation in the tendons of this region of the body. Truly, any of the many tendons in this area can become inflamed. However, one of the most common tendonitis issues in the wrist is known as De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis.
If you have wrist pain near the thumb, the odds are good that you are suffering from De Quervain’s.
Wrist Pain Cause #2: Sprained Wrist
If you fall on an outstretched hand (FOOSH), you may experience many different issues. For instance, you could fracture a bone in your arm and hand. That being said, many FOOSH injuries result in sprained wrists.
A sprain is simply an injury to a ligament. These tricky injuries often take quite a while to heal. But, with rest, most people can make a full recovery after a wrist sprain.
Wrist Pain Cause #3: Fracture
As was mentioned previously, you may experience a fracture in the bones of your forearm, wrist, or hand. A fracture in any of these areas can lead to wrist pain.
Fractures can vary in severity, with some of these injuries requiring surgery, and others simply requiring a little bit of rest time to allow the tissue to heal.
Wrist Pain Cause #4: Radiculopathy
In some cases, you may experience wrist pain when there is nothing actually “wrong” in your wrist. For example, a cervical radiculopathy can lead to wrist pain.
A cervical radiculopathy is a condition in which the nerves that branch off from the neck are pinched or impeded in some way. As a result of this issue, patients often experience pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness along the area of the arm which is innervated by these nerves.
Interestingly, radiculopathies affecting the wrist often require no direct treatment to the wrist itself. In fact, by treating the neck, you can usually experience complete relief of your wrist pain that was caused by the issue in the neck.
Chiropractic Care and Wrist Pain
Your chiropractor is perfectly suited to treat your wrist pain. Chiropractors perform spinal manipulations to help their patients. Specifically, this means adjusting a segment of the spine by using pressure in very detailed ways. By doing so, they can encourage the spine to return to its optimal position. This, in turn, allows the spine to interact with areas of the body more effectively, leading to improved healing, function, and decreased pain.
