When most people think about chiropractic care, they think about back pain. And while chiropractic can certainly help with that, there is an area of the spine that has a far greater influence on your overall health than most people realize. It is called the upper cervical spine, and it may be the most important region of your body that you have never heard of.

Upper cervical care is a specialized branch of chiropractic that focuses specifically on the top two vertebrae in your neck and their relationship to the brainstem and nervous system. It is precise, gentle, and has the potential to affect far more than just your neck.

The Atlas and Axis: Two Small Bones with a Big Job

The top vertebra in your spine is called the atlas, also known as C1. Just below it sits the axis, or C2. Together, these two bones support the weight of your head, allow for the majority of your head’s rotational movement, and protect the most critical junction in your entire nervous system: the point where your brain transitions into your spinal cord.

Unlike the rest of the vertebrae in your spine, the atlas and axis are uniquely shaped and do not have interlocking joints or discs between them in the same way that other spinal segments do. This gives you a remarkable range of motion in your neck, but it also means these two bones are more vulnerable to misalignment. Even a shift of less than a millimeter can be enough to create problems, because of what sits directly behind them.

Why This Area Matters So Much

The brainstem is the part of your brain that sits at the very base of the skull, protected by the atlas and axis. It serves as the central relay station between your brain and the rest of your body. Every signal your brain sends to your organs, muscles, and tissues passes through the brainstem on its way down the spinal cord. And every piece of sensory information your body sends back to the brain travels through the same pathway.

The brainstem is responsible for regulating many of the functions you never have to think about: your heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, digestion, sleep cycles, immune response, hormone balance, and pain processing. When the atlas or axis is misaligned, it can create subtle pressure or tension on the brainstem and the surrounding nerves and blood vessels. That interference does not always produce neck pain. Instead, it can show up as a wide range of symptoms that seem unrelated to the spine.

Conditions That May Be Connected to Upper Cervical Misalignment

Because the upper cervical region influences so many functions through the brainstem and nervous system, misalignments in this area have been associated with a surprisingly wide range of health concerns. Some of the most common conditions that patients seek upper cervical care for include chronic migraines and headaches, recurring neck pain and stiffness, vertigo and dizziness, anxiety and difficulty managing stress, sleep disturbances, brain fog and trouble concentrating, ear infections in children, and digestive issues.

This does not mean that every case of these conditions is caused by an upper cervical misalignment. But when conventional approaches have not provided lasting answers, the upper cervical spine is often an area worth evaluating. Many patients who have spent years managing symptoms without resolution find that correcting an atlas or axis misalignment is the piece they were missing.

How Upper Cervical Misalignments Happen

The atlas and axis can be shifted out of alignment by many of the same things that affect the rest of the spine, but the upper cervical region is particularly susceptible to certain events. The birth process is one of the most common causes, especially births that involve forceps, vacuum extraction, C-section, or prolonged labor. The amount of force placed on a newborn’s head and neck during delivery can be significant, and misalignments that occur at birth may go undetected for years.

Falls, car accidents, sports injuries, and even the cumulative effects of poor posture and screen time can also shift the atlas or axis. Because the symptoms of an upper cervical misalignment are not always felt in the neck, many people live with the effects for a long time before the connection is made.

How We Approach Upper Cervical Care at At Last Chiropractic

At At Last Chiropractic, upper cervical care is a core part of what we do. Dr. Anthony, Dr. Carissa, and Dr. Jenna have specific training in evaluating and adjusting the atlas and axis region, and our primary technique, Torque Release Technique (TRT), is ideally suited for this delicate area of the spine.

The Integrator instrument delivers a gentle, precise impulse that is fast enough and light enough to correct the position of the atlas or axis without any forceful manipulation. There is no twisting of the neck, no cracking, and no sudden movements. The precision of the instrument is critical in this region because the upper cervical spine requires accuracy measured in fractions of a millimeter.

When the atlas and axis are restored to their proper position, the pressure on the brainstem is relieved, nerve communication improves, and the body’s ability to regulate itself begins to function the way it was designed to. Patients often describe the experience as feeling like something has finally shifted, not just physically, but in how their entire body is functioning.
